Creating a Mindful Retreat Wherever You Are
Today, more than ever, our homes needs to be places where we can feel calm and relaxed, where we are able to rest and recharge. Whether we’re working at home or out in the hectic world, having a space that is designed to reduce our stress and tension is essential. When thinking about creating a mindful retreat, what might be included is completely based on individual preferences and needs. It is important to think about the stressors that you experience and how this space might help to reduce them and restore your depleted energy. No matter which space you choose as your own be sure that it is clutter free and invest in a simple way to organize what you will keep in the room. Think about colour. There is no right or wrong colour to use. For some people soft colours are calming, while for others bold, deep colours bring comfort. Lighting can be the natural light from windows or the warm lighting of lamps. Choose furniture based on how the room will be used. Comfortable chairs, an area rug, a footstool are all the perfect set up for reading, knitting or listening to music. Consider immersing yourself in nature by adding plants. Not only do plants add restorative qualities but a study done by Nasa shows that they remove toxins from the air which results in re-oxygenation in your space. There are many low-maintenance types of plants available for those of us without a green thumb. It’s best to have a space that’s distraction free, if that’s possible, so try to avoid having your phone, ipad, or other technology in your space. Use this area to disconnect for even a short time. Once you’ve created it you’ll find that you’re drawn to it and look forward to spending time in your space. You’ll leave it feeling relaxed and ready to take on the world once again. |
